The Oceanic

This design came from one of my favorite prompts in June, #Kaijune! I created my own smaller list for my small Discord Community and this prompt was β€œoceanic.” This is another Kaiju I spent longer than I had intended to but one I thing I love is the ocean and the inhabitants it houses. So I set out to design something I personally would not want to find in the deep blue.

The Process

1

For this design I wanted something lanky and creepy, so I reference eels and the creepiest shark I have seen so far, the goblin shark.

After my initial sketch I felt like I got the elements I wanted from the ocean creatures but needed more Kaiju elements. So I rotated the sketch and added monstrous arms and horns.

2

Once the sketch was where I wanted it to be I started dropping in color and using my favorite combo of the smudge and color picker tools I started building more and more color.

3

After adding in a background I start painting in more details such as scales and highlights but then realized the background color washed everything out. I went with a blue background after since it made more sense with this being an aquatic creature, my next issue came to light seeing the back portions appearing dull. So I made an additional color adjust to better tie everything together.

4

Now that everything was going in the direction I was pleased with I continue adding details like shadows and spot glows.

5

After adding a few more effects I double check the values by creating a solid black layer at the very top of the image in the β€œColor” blend mode to make the image black and white. After checking and adjusting any small areas to make the Kaiju pop more I wrap it up and share.

Overall all this piece took over two hours! Which has been an improvement based on how long I took in the past. Can’t move super quick when painting small details into a design I enjoy.
