Jean Grey Redesign
This was my take at redesigning Jean Gray from Marvel’s X-Men comics as part of a redesign series for an article on ComicsXF. The overall direction for this piece was to not only redesign the character but practice mimicking my watercolor style in a digital format.

The Process
1
During the ideation process I kept these two mental images in mind. I did not put up the images and had them open to look over at. I wanted to take what I remembered about these designs and paint my ideas out without being influenced with the actual reference. I wanted to avoid mimicking elements. Even after I finalized the design I wanted to paint , I wanted to go back and add extra elements I saw on the Gold Ranger onto my Jean Grey design, but I refrained because I knew I would just make a Power Ranger and not my original goal of redesigning Jean Grey.
2
Once my initial ideation process is done and I know the design I want to go with I start sketching out some process until I find one I like.
3
From there I refine the sketch and create the line work using a pencil brush to mimic the roughness of drawing on watercolor paper. I followed up by laying down the base colors I would be using.
4
I had to approach coloring this much differently than usual from my other digital work. I slowly layered on more colors trying to mimic watercolor washes.
5
As I layer more color I as well layered on more textures I like watercolor paper and scanned watercolor washes. To mimic the taped off edge of a traditional watercolor painting, I even roughed up the edge to give the illusion of where my drawing was taped off on a board. Once I reach a desired look, I can call it complete. Knowing when a piece is complete can always be hard but since I was trying to mimic my watercolor style I knew when I could call it complete and ready to share and submit.
