The Alpha
This design came from one of my favorite prompts in June, #Kaijune! I created my own smaller list for my small Discord Community and the very last one was “Alpha.” I originally wanted to create a massive kaiju BUT then thought about an Alpha being a smaller more frail looking kaiju but would use pollen it creates to become an Alpha among other kaijus.

The Process

I started my ideation process with silhouettes, you can see I was starting with the idea of creating a bulky kaiju but once I got the idea of a pollen secreting kaiju I craeted something more lanky. Since I was trying to work fast the second silhouette I created just spoke to me immediately.

After I have my silhouette, I lower the opacity and one a new layer I loosely create line art.

From there I add in my accent color which has been a pinkish tone for all my previous prompts. From there I use the smudge tool to blur colors together and using the color picker I choose my mid-tones and keep painting on more layers of color.

Before adding more detail I like to add in a simple background to help match the overall atmosphere I’m trying to create. After I choose my background I start adding in more colors that stand out against it but don’t overwhelm the eyes.

I keep adding in more and more details using colors I chose with the color picker. While adding further details I keep everything loose but create tighter details to on the focus of the piece.
Since I know I was approaching a stopping point I added in the details of the pollen as well using a scatter brush and adding a glow on top.
Overall all this piece took the longest, coming in at 2.5 hours but I knew it stemmed from how much I really enjoyed working on it.
