The Kraken

I created this concept piece based around the prompt “Kraken” for a Dungeon & Dragons 5e module I am working on with a friend. Right off the bat we knew we wanted a Kraken as a final fight but we wanted it descending from the sky rather than emerging from the deep. I played around with DALL·E to quickly get a starting base and built upon it to give it my artistic marks.

The Process

1

I started this piece by going to DALL·E and asking it to generate an image of a Kraken descending from the sky. It provided 3 variations but one stuck out the most to me and I knew it was a great starting point for my take on a kraken. So I imported the image into Procreate and started smudging edges and painting right on top of it, creating my design but keeping the overall atmosphere

2

Once I was happy with the initial sketch I started adding more detail. I went to Pinterest to get inspired and I cam across this tentacle creature by PTimm. Using that image as reference I started adding in more details and an accent color.

3

From there I just keep adding detail but focusing the most detail on the head of the kraken, adding sharper lines and more glow.

4

To help emphasize the size of the Kraken I add birds flying off in the foreground to inform the viewer how big this beast truly is.

I finish the piece with a few final touches and an overall tint adjustment to tie everything together and call it complete. I always try to create my kaiju designs with just the right amount of detail and the upmost speed. This one came in at a little over an hour!
